We’re going to have therapy animals at the library tomorrow. Squee!!
Trained therapy animals (we have several dogs, as well as one cat on our roster) hang out in the children’s section with their people for a couple of hours, and kids can sign up for a 20-minute session with the animal. The whole point of this is to help reluctant readers become more comfortable with reading, but it’s a joy to watch readers of all levels interacting with the animals. It’s really a good program, and I’m glad we’ve finally gotten it started at my branch.
This is the third time we’ve had this event, and the second time I’ll be there to see it. The first time there weren’t very many kids who signed up to read, so the staff got to spend lots of time with the animals. (None of us minded this at all.) I think there were more kids the second time the animals came, but I wasn’t there that day, so I’m not sure.
I hope we get a good turnout tomorrow!
I have thought about getting Lush Puppy certified, mostly so everyone I work with can meet him. He loves attention and people, which is a plus, but he’s sometimes not so good at sitting still when he’s excited, which is a definite minus.
