Literacy Debate: Online, R U Really Reading?
I have mixed feelings.
Yes, any reading is better than no reading, and yes, reading on the Internet is still reading. However, I don’t think that reading on the Internet is the *same* as reading a book (or a magazine, or a newspaper).
My main problem is this:
Books are not Nadia Konyk’s thing. Her mother, hoping to entice her, brings them home from the library, but Nadia rarely shows an interest. […] Deborah Konyk always believed it was essential for Nadia and her 8-year-old sister, Yashca, to read books. She regularly read aloud to the girls and took them to library story hours. […] Ms. Konyk, who took a part-time job at a dollar store chain a year and a half ago, said she did not have much time to read books herself. There are few books in the house.
Children learn by example. If your child does not see you reading for fun, they are not going to be inclined to read for fun. There are exceptions, of course, but generally this is the case. “Making” your child read “for fun” is not going to make them love reading–instead, they will see it as a chore, or even worse, as a hated punishment.
And that’s not going to solve any problems.

Nightmare

I had horrible dreams last night about work. Though not, surprisingly, about the class I have to teach today.
Oh no. That would be too logical.
I dreamed that all of the public Internet computers that had been having problems, and had supposedly been fixed were having problems again. (They have been acting up IRL, but so far the fix has worked.)
I also dreamed that there were kids hiding inside the library at closing time, and we had to chase them down and catch them. (No idea where that one came from, unless it’s related to the Roof Incident of last week.)
I also dreamed that we had to solve an intricate puzzle on the wall before we could lock up. (I guess I’ve been playing too much Zelda before bedtime.)
Suffice to say, I am not feeling my best right now. 😦
